Cooking Three Meals A Day

Our days on the farm started early in the morning and we started out with a full meal for our breakfast. We would have ham and eggs and rice or other cereals and most of the time fried potatoes. Sometimes the meat would be sausage or bacon that was cured in the smoke house aafter my Dad would butcher a hog. His cured hams were the best ever. We stuffed our own sausage. That was not a fun thing to so. I remember as a very young girl making lunch for my siblings and Mom and Dad. I remember one time my Mom told me to make biscuits for lunch and I was not strong enough to get the lid off the baking powder can so I had to take it to the garden where they were working and have my Dad take the lid off. I was about ten. Remember back then we did our cooking on a wood burning range. You didn't just turn on a knob and instant flame. Those stoves were sure hot in the summer and as we had no electricity we had no fans to keep us cool. But I do believe those stoves cooked the best food and baked the best bread I have ever tasted. As those loaves came out of the oven, we could hardly wait until it cooled enough to cut a slice. My favorite was that crusty heel that I would spread with that fresh churned butter. It had a heavenly taste! It is a good thing we didn't know about calories, fats and all that stuff. Our life style was much different then. We got up very early in the morning ate a big breakfast, worked in the garden, did chores, cooked, cleaned and then we had play time when all the chores were done. Needless to say we were tired by evening so our bedtime was also early.
